"Occupations" have sprouted up throughout the world and the vast majority of them have created their own solutions for publishing content to the web. This diversity and decentralization of solutions should be celebrated and encouraged because it means there is no single point of failure within the occupy movement's communication ecosystem.
Our mission is to strengthen this distributed ecosystem by making it easy to aggregate, organize, curate and interact with content coming from occupations. RSS is the perfect format for this job because the vast majority of occupations are currently publishing RSS feeds (whether they're aware of it or not) that can easily be collected, organized, repackaged and distributed for free through the internet.
[edit] Get Syndicated
Occupy.net News currently syndicates content from occupations in the Occupy.net Directory and from select working groups. Please make sure your website is registered at directory.occupy.net to be included.
[edit] Help Out
There are a number of ways people can help with this project.
- Technology: we need more people to help build out this Wordpress-based website. Our current team is stretched thin. If you're a designer or developer with Wordpress experience, please contact news[at]occupy[dot]net.
- Data: we currently use this spreadsheet to log information about the feeds we're syndicating. As you can see, there are many cells that need to be filled out. All you need to do is go to the website to find the information that's requested in the spreadsheet and fill out their fields. To be granted the ability to edit the document, you can request access through the google doc or email news[at]occupy[dot]net.
- Administrators: when a feed's information is completed in the spreadsheet, we need to place it into the news.occupy.net website. This requires a basic understanding of how Wordpress works. Explicit directions are on the Occupy.net News Use page.
- Curators: the system is pulling in dozens of content items every day. We'd like to built a team of curators who review the news items coming in, pick important items to feature on the homepage and add descriptive tags to stories so they're easier to find. If you're interested in this please email news[at]occupy[dot]net.
