This page is an evolving list of volunteer roles to help run this group smoothly. Please keep role descriptions general where possible so they can be shared and reused. Please make the titles of these roles more cool.

[edit] NYC Meeting Greeter

Goal: Welcome new people to meetings, update them with past
meeting information and explain web tools and information flows


Tasks:

  • Create a space in the beginning of each meeting for new people
  • Make sure that emails are added to lists
  • Help them find tasks and groups that fit their interests

Goal: To encourage Occupiers from across the country to get to NYC and get them the info they need to have an awesome time.
Tasks:

  • Attend national calls as often as possible along with National Call Coordinator
  • Write Updates for the S17 hub on solidarity actions, etc. (national call coordinator would do in person report backs)
  • Work with campaign email team to communicate with other Occupies- send an invite with advice on getting buses sorted, etc.
  • Special Focus: Coordinate with Support cluster- Housing, Transport, Kitchen, Medics- to make sure their information is posted to the Hub and shared with non-NYC folks.
  • Key partners: Calendar Coordinator, Support cluster, Volunteer and Classifieds coordinator

Doesn't have to be in NYC but should be comfortable with technology (email, Skype, Facebook, etc.)

[edit] Classifieds Coordinator

Goal: To present opportunities for new folks to enter the planning process as well as assist with events themselves on S15-17
Tasks:

  • Learn how to submit classifieds via the S17 hub (i.e. so they are linked to the Hub not just floating out there.)
  • Advocate for the 'Help Wanted' Section of the S17 Hub by participating in event planning, especially the Support, Education and Outreach clusters.
  • Post tasks and projects to classifieds via the S17 Hub
  • Brainstorm with others to get the word out via Interoccupy, the 'Your Inbox: Occupied' newsletter, social media, etc.

[edit] S17 Volunteer Liaisons in the different clusters (Action, Education, etc.)


Goals: To help on board new folks to grow our movement.
Tasks:

  • Encourage your group to discuss what people-power ("volunteer") needs they have for S15-S17. Bring up the topic in meetings and get buy-in from your group about setting aside stuff for new folks to do and incorporating them into your activities
  • Consider assignments for these categories of folks:
    • coming from outside NYC for the weekend.
    • NYC people who won't be a part of the planning process but will want to contribute as S17 nears.
    • in NYC, with limited internet access (occupiers who need to be communicated with in-person).
  • Be available to answer questions from Services folks and new folks.
  • Write description of what is needed and send to services (at) interoccupy (dot) net and we'll post them for you!
  • Stay up-to-date on changes and communicate as necessary with Services group point people, especially Classifieds Coordinator.

Goal: To present event information that is as complete and correct as possible.
Tasks:

  • Collect the following information on all events leading up to and on S15-17
   * Contact info for group organizing event in case of further questions (keep private if requested)
   * Day, time, location
   * Description, incl. sponsoring groups, activity, level of confrontation, props requested, etc.
  • Post this information to the Hub calendar. (could be done off-site)
  • Forward event info to 'Your Inbox: Occupied' NYC newsletter team for their S17 section. (could be done off-site)

Goal: Manage the Interoccupy S17 HUB page.

  • Ensure information on HUB page is accurate
  • Assist in posting updates, minutes, and other information

Goal: Ensure that roles are filled and volunteers are well informed. Maintain and document successes and challenges.
Tasks:

  • Weekly check-ins with all defined roles
  • Find and coordinate training of new volunteers
  • Keep role and checklist documentation up-to-date
  • Maintain S17 Service Roles spreadsheet
  • Write weekly blog post describing organizational efforts

Goal: Train, advocate, and ensure that groups are adding content to this shared knowledge resource
Tasks:

  • Assist groups in adding their information to wiki
  • Maintain good Wiki formatting and categorization
  • Train and recruit more wiki masters

Goal: To present good information on what we've discussed & decided, which will allow new folks to enter the planning process smoothly.
Tasks:

  • Collect meeting notes from clusters and groups
  • Upload notes to website
  • Posts notes to announcement list
  • Write update of S17 meeting and post to Hub (could be done off-site)
  • Advocates taking notes at meetings in sub-groups and clusters

[edit] Contact Organizer

Goal: to gather lists of allies and reduce duplication of 'asks'. We all have lists of allies and sympathizers who might be helpful in planning S17, supporting our needs or bringing people to the events themselves. Rather than inundate these folks with requests or miss out on talking to good friends, this person would be passionate about gathering these information resources and sharing them with the S17 group.
Tasks:

  • learn how Interoccupy.net can gather and present this information: our CiviCRM may be one tool.
  • contact members of the OWS community who have contact lists- newsletter team, DA/mutual aid folks, support cluster, etc.
  • collect their concerns about sharing this information
  • sketch out a set of community agreements on the use of this information around who gets access, what gets shared at different levels of privacy and contact protocols (frequency, etc)
  • gather and present information in a way that is respectful of the fact that this is often sensitive information.

[edit] Housing Site Coordinator

Goal: to manage the relationship with one or more of our potential housing sites for out-of-towners We have a list of a couple dozen sites (churches, etc) that have hosted Occupiers in the past, or may be open to hosting them in the future. We would like to assess their capacity and availability for S17. We have a well-defined "Ask" letter and Community Agreement, and will provide organizational support. We just need people to make contact with and be the internal liason for one or more of the sites.
Tasks:

  • Make initial contact with the site
  • Determine their willingness and capacity
  • Schedule bottomliners for each of the on-site roles: De-escalation, Sanitation, Comfort, etc
  • Field ongoing communications to/from the site

Goal: Assist S17 group in drafting and sending mass e-mails to supporters.
Tasks:

  • Work with 'Your Inbox: Occupied' team to draft and send mass e-mails on behalf of S17 group
  • Set and promote strict deadlines for newsletters
  • Develop email Strategy

Goal: To maintain relationships with volunteers, supporters, and allied organizations
Tasks:

  • Administer CiviCRM
  • Coordinate with other admin
  • Develop strategy to fulfill S17 group plans

Goal: To make sure personal data and private data is not exposed to the public
Tasks:

  • Constantly check documentation for leaks, edit accordingly
  • Audit access control to important online properties

Goal: to bottom line the fliers, pamphlets and other promotion materials. This person should also collect materials that would be useful for solidarity actions. So far, some suggestions have been:

  • A message from OWS that other occupies can read at their actions
  • Debt burn materials
  • move your money materials
  • citizen's arrest materials
  • and anything else

Goal: To help NY Assemblies Coordinate for S17 Outreach and Actions
Tasks:

  • Host bi-weekly conference calls for NY Assemblies
  • Provide report backs from the S17 planning process to NY Assemblies
  • Coordinate S15 and 16 Teach-ins and participation with NY Assemblies
  • Coordinate S17 outreach with the local NY Assemblies
  • Coordinate S17 actions with the NY Assemblies

  • Give individuals and groups access to @s17nyc.org e-mails
  • Support groups and individuals using mail, voice, document, and other services

Tasks:

  • Maintain active moderation of all lists
  • Ensure community agreements are enforced and properly documented on the list info and/or footer
  • Ensure all groups who need lists have them
  • Ensure all lists have up-to-date links and messaging in their footers and info pages.

Goal: Communicate with PR working groups to get the message out to the press

  • Assist in drafting press releases
  • Communicate with PR working groups

Goal: To make fliers, posters, and other printed material accessible to movement.
Tasks:

  • Maintain online archive of all posters (coordinate with occuprint.org and other allies)
  • Assist working groups design, print, and distribute materials

  • Marshal forces to manage S17 social media
  • Maintain connections with Occupy Allies

Goal: Work together to provide a safe space for people traveling to NYC for S17 which is respectful of the communities housing us

  • Site Contact: Coordinate volunteers and intake sleepers. Make sure they have the gear they need. Connect with the hosts and make sure everything is running smoothly. Put out fires.
    • REQUIREMENTS: Cellphone, laptop, adept with spreadsheets. Punctual.

  • Medics
    • GOALS: Keep people safe and healthy. Twice a day, in shifts.
    • REQUIREMENTS: Street medic or other relevant training.

  • Sanitation
    • GOALS: Sweep, scrub, separate recycling. Twice a day, in shifts.
    • REQUIREMENTS: Compulsive about cleanliness.

  • De-escalation
    • GOALS Mediate conflicts and defuse tensions, without using hostile language or threatening presence. Interface with law enforcement if necessary.
    • REQUIREMENTS: Cool head and calm demeanor. No prior experience required. Training available.
